Returning a Rental Car: What to Know

The vehicle must be returned at the date, time, and location stated in the Agreement and in the same condition received except ordinary wear. A final inspection may occur after drop-off, and after-hours responsibility continues until that inspection under the Agreement.

This guide explains STARS rental terms in plain language for general information. The Rental Agreement and Rental Record control the actual terms of each rental.

What the Agreement says

The controlling concepts

  • The vehicle must be returned to the rental office or another specified location at the stated date and time and in the same condition received, except ordinary wear.
  • The condition determination is subject to a final inspection, including for immediately recognizable, hidden, or facility damage after drop-off.
  • For an after-hours return, responsibility for damage continues until final inspection, and Charges may continue until the return location opens.
  • An extension requires contacting the rental office before the due-in date.
  • Service or replacement of parts or accessories requires prior approval; the renter must check and maintain fluids.
  • The vehicle must be returned with at least the same fuel level as when rented.

What it means in plain language

Understand the boundary

Dropping off the keys does not necessarily complete the final condition review. The Agreement reserves a later inspection and specifically addresses after-hours responsibility.

A requested extension is not automatic. Contact the rental office before the due date and obtain confirmation under the Rental Record and Agreement.

What the renter should do

Know Before You Arrive

  1. 1Confirm the exact return location, date, time, and after-hours process before the final day.
  2. 2Return the vehicle in the required condition and with at least the starting fuel level.
  3. 3Contact the rental office before the due date if an extension is needed.
  4. 4Obtain prior approval before servicing the vehicle or replacing parts or accessories.
  5. 5Keep return records and any condition documentation.
